Benefits

  • Chlorination of new or repaired water lines ensures contamination-free water for the customer.
  • Limits liability for the utility by ensuring the water supply is safe.
  • Can be done easily following pressure testing to get the line into service as quickly as possible.
  • Meets or exceeds AWWA specifications.

Important Note:

Chlorination is a process used to purify water lines prior to placing them into service. This is normally done at the same time as the pressure testing, utilizing the same main connections. The chlorinated line is usually left for a period of 24 hours, then thoroughly flushed prior to use to remove high concentrations of chlorine.

Customer Responsibilities:

  • The pipeline must be full of water and have the air purged from the system.
  • Provide a 3⁄4" pump connection at the main.
  • The system must be isolated with all fittings, valves, hydrants, caps and plugs restrained.

Information Required Before Chlorinating:

  • Size of the pipeline to be chlorinated.
  • Length of pipeline to be chlorinated.
  • Are there valves in-line for isolation?
  • Are there any services installed off the pipeline?

It is advisable to have an accepted pressure test before proceeding with chlorination. This will eliminate the need to rechlorinate should the pipeline require repairs to achieve an acceptable pressure test.
