On August 27, 1859 Col. Edwin Drake struck oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania. This discovery led to the development of the first gas pipeline in the United States. Until the 1890's when electricity took over, gas was primarily used to light city streets. In 1885 Robert Bunsen invented the Bunsen Burner which enlightened the world to the thermal properties of gas.
Today there is an extensive gas line distribution network in this country which is expanding rapidly.
