Over the last 20 years’ technological advances in soil and erosion control have been developed at a break neck pace. What was once accomplished with one of two solutions, hay bales or rip rap, has now turned into a broad landscape of specialized products that are geared toward protecting and preserving the environment while being cost effective. One area that has seen major upgrades over the last few years are erosion control blankets and knowing which ones to use for what applications can be confusing. Below are some rules to help you decide which type will work best for your site needs.

Coconut Fibers

Blanket materials range from straw and coir fiber (coconut fiber) to newly developed polypropylene fibers and blends of these products. Each has scenarios that they work best in and properly understanding the site is key to knowing which to use. When evaluating a site a number of factors need to considered, however the two primary considerations are flow and slope. When it comes to flow, it is important to understanding the consistent and potential flow an area will have to endure. Slope, which is the other primary consideration, is calculated by determining the rise (measuring the change in elevation from the low point to the highest point) and dividing that number by the run (the actual horizontal distance between the same two points). Once flow and slope are determined it is easier to determine which products to use.

Blanket Types Slope Flow Longevity
Straw Fiber 2:1 – 4:1 Low to Moderate 45D to 12M
Straw Fiber/Coir Fiber 1:1 – 2:1 Medium to High 18M to Permanent
Coir Fiber 1:1 – Greater High 24M to Permanent
UV Stabilized PP 1:1 – Greater High to Greater Permanent

The longevity of each product varies based on the mix of the fiber matrix, netting that contains the matrix and thread type. Knowing now that there are so many options available on the market it is important to take the time to research each site and ensure products being applied are effective not only for the short term but for the long-term success of the project.
